Woman who ‘battered’ house help arraigned

A housewife, Mrs Esther Ijeoma Amaechi, who allegedly inflicted various degrees of injuries on her house help, Joy Kanu, has appeared before an Ogba Magistrate Court, Lagos.

Forty-three-year-old Kanu is a mother of nine, among who are two sets of twins and triplets.

Mrs Amaechi was arraigned on Friday for assault before Magistrate Mr. O. D. Njoku.

Mrs Amaechi was charged with unlawfully assaulting Kanu by using an iron rod and wood to beat her, thereby inflicting “various degrees of injuries on her body, causing multiple fractures in her two hands and head and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 173, Criminal Law of Lagos 2015”.

Amaechi pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Njoku granted her bail in the sum of N50,000.

Meanwhile, more facts have emerged in the alleged assault of Kanu.

Joy is said to be partially mentally unstable.

The house help had been living with Mrs Amaechi for about one year and eight months before the alleged incident.

It was gathered that prior to her coming to Lagos, the house help was living with Mrs Amaechi’s mother in the Southeast, and that it was Mrs Amaechi’s mother who suggested that she come to Lagos to live with the suspect.

Esther Kanu was reportedly married to one Kanu who is the father of her nine children.

Mr Kanu was said to have abandoned her on account of her ill health.

A source said Mrs Amaechi owns a household items shop which the house help kept despite her mental health challenges.

Mrs Amaechi is also said to often brutalise the house on suspicion of stealing money.
