Nigeria women’s basketball team, D’tigress are close to qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after beating Mozambique 85-51 in the qualifiers yesterday.
It was an incredible comeback victory for the Nigerian Ladies, who had a slow start as they lost the first quarter but came from behind to win 85-51.
On the night that saw all the 12 players on the roaster scored at least two points, Promise Amukamara was the one who led the team with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists.
Rebound Queen, Evelyn Akhator picked up 7 and scored 9 points.
Team captain, Adaora Elonu had 10pts, 4 assists and 3 steals with 100% records from her two points attempts while Ezinne Kalu recorded 11 points and 5 assists.
Having trailed 18-19 in the first quarter, D’tigress dominated the rest of the quarters, 23-9, 15-13, 19-10 to enjoy a 34 point victory.
D’tigress, who are also drawn against world champions USA and hosts of the qualifying tournament Serbia, will take on Serbia in their next qualifier scheduled to come up tomorrow.
With USA already qualified for Tokyo Olympics, Nigeria are gunning for one of the other two tickets from the group.
Although Nigeria have already qualified technically, but the Tokyo ticket will be handed them if USA defeat Mozambique in the group’s next gane tomorrow.
